Proceedings of a Nordic pre-conference to ICME 10 and to the HPM satellite meeting in 2004 – A tribute to the work of John Fauvel in the Abel Bicentennial Year 2002.
The aim of the conference was: To present, discuss and develop concrete ideas from the history of mathematics, which can be used to motivate, illustrate and enhance the understanding of some key concepts and methods from the mathematics curriculum.
The title comes from a phrase the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel once wrote in his Paris notebook of 1826: It appears to me that if one wants to make progress in mathematics one should study the masters and not the pupils.
